It is interesting to find out what caused appendicitis. Often it is a mystery. But there are well recognised causes for this.
Most common reason is various viral infections causing swelling of the appendix. But often patients will not have any other symptoms of these viral infections.
Other reason is the blockage of the part of the appendix that connect it to the gut. Appendix is a hallow blind ending tube, thus when it is blocked, its contents can not empty into the gut. This allows these fluids to collect inside the appendix causing it to swell. This causes increased pressure inside the appendix that puts pressure on its veins. This leads to further swelling and Appendicitis. Further swelling of the appendix can potentially cause the appendix to rupture causing contamination of the area around the appendix and some times the whole abdomen. If it leads to this situation, it is a severe condition that needs urgent operation.
